Case Study: Servicing and Cleaning of Pressure Release Valves
Project Summary
At Brocklesby Biogas, a comprehensive service operation was successfully completed on eight Pressure Release Valves (PRVs) across both post-fermentation and pre-storage tank systems. The cleaning and servicing work was carried out over three days between 21st and 23rd July, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of gas management infrastructure at the facility.
What Was Involved
The work covered:
4 PRVs inside two post-fermenter tanks (2 per tank)
4 PRVs mounted externally on pre-storage tanks
The internal PRVs presented a unique challenge as they were mounted inside the post-fermenter tanks, unlike standard external fittings, making conventional access impossible.
Special Access Solutions
Accessing the interior-mounted PRVs required an innovative approach. The flexible roofs of the digesters were carefully peeled back to expose the valves. A crane with a bosun’s chair attachment was then brought on-site to allow an engineer to be safely lowered into position.
An additional engineer stood on the gantry to assist, passing over the jetwash lance, which was used to clean the PRVs prior to servicing. The team worked in coordination to ensure each valve was thoroughly cleaned and restored to optimal working condition.
Safety-First Approach
Health and safety remained a top priority throughout the operation. All engineers were harnessed appropriately and adhered to confined space entry procedures. The crane access and equipment handling were conducted in strict compliance with safety standards to mitigate any risk.

Looking ahead
As biogas facilities continue to grow in scale and complexity, maintaining essential safety components such as pressure release valves is critical. This project showcases not only technical expertise but also the importance of tailored, site- specific solutions.
